Awalnya dikenalkan tahun 2010. Nikon D3100 merupakan hasil pengembangan dari kamera-kamera seri-seri sebelumnya, misal D3000, dengan tetap mempertahankan fitur-fitur yang sudah baik. Fitur seperti Guide Mode dan 11 titik focus tetap ada dalam kamera ini.

Selain kemampuan menentukan 11 titik focus yang dapat dipilih secara otomatis maupun manual, di Nikon D3100 ada fitur 3D tracking AF. Sistem Kerja 3D tracking AF dengan jalan mengenali warna kemudian mengikuti gerakan si obyek dengan tetap menjaga fokus yang terbaik meski obyek bergerak dari kiri ke kanan atau dari depan ke belakang. Sedangkan u/ obyek manusia ada fitur face detection yang berfungsi mengoptimalkan focus pada wajah.

Untuk videonya, Nikon D3100 udah full HD dengan resolusi 1920 x 1080 pixels 24fps. Hal ini salah satu yang membedakan dengan seri D3000, selain perbedaan lainnya seperti resolusi yang lebih besar (14MP) dlsb.

Kesemua fitur dan pengaturan kamera akan terasa enak dan mudah diakses karena desain tombol yang proporsional. Begitu pula tuk melihat hasilnya yang terasa lebih lega dikarenakan ukuran lcd yang besar, 3 inch.

Untuk harganya, Nikon D3100 termasuk kamera DLSR dengan harga terbaik bagi pemula, murah tapi bukan murahan. Kombinasi dengan fitur, kinerja dan hasilnya sangat berimbang.
